TYPE: Expansion Feasibility Study for the Gonzalez Convention Center
YEAR: 2007
CLIENT: City of San Antonio
SCOPE OF WORK: Review of Existing Conditions Analysis
Market Demand Analysis
Financial Operations Analysis
Supportable Expansion Program Analysis

In 2007, CSL was retained by the City of San Antonio to conduct an expansion and improvement analysis for the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The facility was originally constructed in 1968 in conjunction with the World's Fair (at HemisFair Park) and has undergone several improvement projects, most recently an expansion of the Center that doubled its size in 2001.

Currently, the GCC offers approximately 426,600 square feet of exhibit space, including 228,400 square feet of contiguous exhibit space in Halls C and D, 113,600 square feet of meeting space and 90,100 square feet of ballroom space. Since the expansion, the Center has accommodated high levels of use, hosting a wide array of local and non-local events including conventions, tradeshows, conferences banquets, meetings and special events.

The comprehensive study consisted of the following primary tasks:
  • Review of existing San Antonio convention industry conditions
  • Market and financial analysis
  • Determination of supportable expansion program approach
This analysis provided recommendations regarding the direction of growth and improvements which may be needed to maximize the Center's competitive position and ability to attract both larger revenue-generating conventions, as well as multiple overlapping events.
